天竺山有今古二称法。今指西湖群山主峰，在西湖之西偏南约5公里处，海拔412.5米。因其北灵隐、三天竺一带山谷为西湖佛寺起源地，“天竺”为古印度国名称，故名天竺山。旧名天竺峰，又名天门山。古时统称灵隐至琅岭一带山岭为天竺山。
