何汤，字冉雍，东汉南昌县人。年少时师事桓荣，学习《尚书》。后官拜郎中，守皇宫开阳门。在刘秀刘秀微服私访夜归时，何汤坚决按规定不放光武帝进宫，得到光武帝的赞赏。建武十九年（43年），光武帝立子庄为太子，提拔何汤为虎贲中郎将，为太子讲授《尚书》。
