刘宋侨置县。

永昌县于南朝宋孝建二年（455）侨置，故治在今四川郫县唐昌镇。历经宋，齐，梁，大约在西魏、北周时候撤销。

北宋开宝四年(971年)改名永昌县，崇宁元年(1102年)改名崇宁县。
